OKLAHOMA: State lawmaker working to enact controversial Merry Christmas bill today

Posted: December 12, 2013

OKLAHOMA CITY - One state lawmaker is trying to ensure schools can celebrate the religious reasons for Christmas without fear of any backlash.

Later Monday morning, Rep. Ken Walker of Tulsa is announcing the Merry Christmas bill.

Walker said the bill would protect Christmas and how it's celebrated in our schools.

The measure would allow schools to celebrate Christmas and use religious-based imagery like nativity scenes and Christmas trees. It would also allow faculty and staff to use phrases like Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah without any backlash.

The proposal is similar to a bill Texas signed into law back in June.

The news conference is set for 10 a.m. at the State Capitol.
